Dog theft is a growing concern for pet owners, especially for those with rare or expensive breeds. To combat this, some owners go to extreme lengths to keep their furry companions safe. One woman has taken an unconventional approach—dyeing her Great Pyrenees bright red. The internet is divided on whether this is a brilliant strategy or an unnecessary stunt.
A Bright Red Great Pyrenees: Meet Dandy
Chloe, a dog mom from the U.S., is the owner of a striking 2-year-old Great Pyrenees named Dandy. Unlike most Great Pyrenees, who have a thick white coat, Dandy sports a bold, crimson hue. The reason? Chloe uses a vegan, pet-safe dye to keep her beloved pup from being stolen.

Her unique approach quickly gained attention on TikTok, where videos of Dandy have racked up millions of views and over 10 million likes. Many viewers were amused by the dog’s resemblance to Clifford the Big Red Dog, while others raised concerns about the ethics of dyeing a pet.
Why Dye a Dog Bright Red?
Chloe has defended her decision, explaining that Great Pyrenees dogs are a rare breed in her area and could be targeted by thieves. She believes that Dandy’s unusual appearance makes him less attractive to criminals, as he is now instantly recognizable.
Additionally, Chloe claims Dandy enjoys the attention his vibrant color brings. As a dog that “loves people and kids,” the red fur supposedly makes him more approachable and friendly in public spaces. She also uses her TikTok platform to educate pet owners on safe dyeing practices, ensuring that no harm comes to pets in the process.
Social Media Reactions: Praise and Backlash
While many social media users support Chloe’s creative theft-deterrent method, others remain skeptical.
🔹 Supporters argue:
✔️ The dye is pet-safe and non-toxic.
✔️ Dandy is well cared for and happy.
✔️ Chloe has the right to color her dog as she sees fit.
🔹 Critics claim:
❌ The dye won’t actually prevent theft.
❌ It’s just a gimmick for social media attention.
❌ Dogs should be left in their natural state.
Interestingly, despite her enthusiasm for dyeing Dandy, Chloe has not updated his TikTok since February. On his Instagram, the last post from July showed Dandy returning to his original white fur, with Chloe hinting at a possible “touch-up” soon.
Is This a Clever Anti-Theft Strategy or Just for Show?
The debate continues: is dyeing a pet an effective way to prevent dognapping, or is it simply an attention-grabbing stunt? While some see it as a harmless and creative idea, others feel pets should be left as nature intended.

Mean, stupid, and unnecessary.
I love it, and I’m sure others do too. I used to get my poodle groomed every 3 weeks and she always had bows and smelled wonderful…. To me! I’m sure she would have loved forego the bath and frills. Dandy looks, well, just Dandy as a redhead!
Dogs love attention, he looks well taken care of,I have seen both neglected &abused dogs, this is not one of them, let her be she cares enough about her dog to be proactive. I would be heartbroken if someone stole my dog
Dandy is beautiful in any color. It’s quite easy to see that Chloe loves her dog very much. I hope their absence on the platforms doesn’t mean anything is wrong with either of them. Chloe has a right to protect her boy any means necessary and bright red is very handsome. Love you both! 🐾🐾💞💞
