Animal cruelty cases can be shocking, but some discoveries leave even experienced rescuers shaken to their core.
On April 15, officers from the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) responded to what initially sounded like a routine call. A concerned resident reported hearing noises coming from inside a dumpster, assuming it was likely a raccoon.
What Animal Control found instead was a scene of extreme and deliberate cruelty.
Inside the dumpster was a dog — alive — with his entire head tightly wrapped in duct tape. The tape covered his eyes and muzzle, leaving him unable to see, breathe normally, or call for help. His front and back legs were bound together, his tail was taped, and food waste and debris were matted into his fur.
“I have never seen anything like it,” said Kevin Wiederin, an NHS staff member who responded to the call. “The muzzle was completely taped. The eyes were covered. Both the front and back legs were bound together.”
The timing of the rescue was nothing short of miraculous.
According to NHS, less than 30 minutes after officers arrived, a garbage truck came and emptied the dumpster. Had the call been delayed, the dog would almost certainly not have survived.
Emergency Rescue and Medical Care
The dog was rushed to the Nebraska Humane Society, where veterinarians sedated him to safely remove the tape. The adhesive was so severe that staff had to shave parts of his fur to free him completely.
Despite the horrific condition in which he was found, medical staff discovered something remarkable: the dog had only mild skin irritation and no life-threatening injuries.
Even more astonishing was his behavior.
Once freed, the dog remained calm and responsive — even wagging his tail, a quiet but powerful sign of resilience after unimaginable trauma.
A Missing Dog Identified
With the tape removed, staff were able to scan for a microchip.
The dog was identified as Leo, a family pet who had been reported missing just days earlier.
Leo’s owner, Erin Dillon-Pasillas, said he had slipped out of the house while she was taking her son to school. What followed were days of panic and desperate searching — calling shelters, filing reports, and waiting anxiously for any sign of her dog.
“Every day got more stressful,” Erin said. “There was just silence. I was shaking when I called, hoping it would be him.”
When she learned Leo had been found alive, relief was quickly mixed with heartbreak over what he had endured.
“He’s the sweetest dog,” she said. “I can’t understand why anyone would do this.”
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not yet identified who bound and abandoned Leo. There were no surveillance cameras near the dumpster where he was found.
Nebraska Humane Society is urging anyone with information to contact Animal Services, and a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Leo is now safely back with his family, recovering at home and scheduled for follow-up veterinary care.
A Case That Should Not Be Forgotten
Leo survived because someone listened, reported what they heard, and acted quickly. His story is a reminder that animal cruelty often happens unseen — and that lives depend on awareness, accountability, and compassion.
Justice for Leo now depends on the public. What happened to him must not be dismissed as an isolated act, but recognized for what it was: a deliberate attempt to silence and discard a living being.
