Matt Woods had no idea what he would witness when he sent his drone up to survey the ocean. On Australia’s Bondi Beach, when his Mavic 2 Zoom lifted off from his balcony, it went over the open sea, and that’s when Woods witnessed something amazing. He could plainly see a huge shark circling on his screen. Woods then observed that the shark was swimming close to a spear fisherman who was fending the shark off with his spear.
Woods was instantly alarmed since the sight seemed dangerous. According to Woods, “the diver was shooing the shark away and jabbing it with his spear rifle.” “The shark then turned its attention to the diver’s connected float. He was thrashing it around while charging at it and attempting to bite it.
Even after he alerted the lifeguards to the danger by calling them, Woods kept an eye on the diver and the predator, which seemed to be a mako shark. Before a lifeguard jet ski could remove the shark from the area, it took almost 30 minutes. Woods observed so he could pinpoint the spot for the authorities while the fisherman continued to wrestle with the shark.
The diver scrambled up on some rocks once the lifeguard cleared the waters, which relieved the drone photographer. The diver who Woods had just saved was nowhere to be seen as he made his way to the shore. They could get the chance to meet now that the incident has gained attention.
To be sure, incidents like the one Woods witnessed are extremely uncommon. Only nine unprovoked mako shark attacks have been documented since 1580, and only one of those was deadly. Spear fishermen may carry dead fish with them, making them more susceptible to sharks’ unwanted attention. Without the diver’s report, it is difficult to determine the exact type of the shark and the circumstances surrounding what Woods witnessed. Whatever the situation, Woods using his drone that day was undoubtedly fortunate for the diver.
