Astonishing discoveries emerge from the depths of Thonis-Heracleion, the submerged city off Egypt’s coast. Amidst the ruins of a fallen temple, divers unearthed a trove of riches, including gold artifacts, intricate jewelry, ceramics, and offerings to deities.

Thonis-Heracleion, once known as the Venice of the Nile, thrived 2,300 years ago, becoming a Mediterranean hub. However, it succumbed to rising sea levels and seismic upheavals, vanishing beneath the waves, along with 110 square kilometers of the Nile Delta.

In recent excavations led by the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) and Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, divers focused on the city’s south canal. Here, they unveiled the remnants of a grand temple dedicated to Amun, the god of air. Among the treasures lay silver ritual instruments, gold jewelry, and delicate alabaster perfume containers.

The divers also stumbled upon the remains of a Greek sanctuary devoted to Aphrodite, revealing bronze and ceramic relics. This underscores the coexistence of Greek traders and settlers during the time of the Pharaohs of the Saïte dynasty.

Thonis-Heracleion is just one of many Mediterranean cities explored by this team, as they delve into Egypt’s sunken past, including the submerged ruins of Canopus and parts of ancient Alexandria lost to the sea. These underwater excavations continue to unveil the secrets of civilizations lost beneath the waves.
