Beluga whales are known for their sociable and friendly nature, but a recent sighting of one near Hammerfest, Norway, was particularly unusual. This beluga whale was wearing a harness, which experts later confirmed was of Russian origin, leading to speculation that the whale was trained by the Russian navy for spying purposes and had defected.
Since being freed from the harness, the whale has remained in the area, and locals have had the chance to get to know him. Recently, a group of friends went down to the waterfront hoping to catch a glimpse of the whale, and they got more than they bargained for.
Ina Mansika and her friends lay down on the dock to observe the whale and hopefully pet him. However, Mansika accidentally dropped her phone into the water, and it fell to the bottom of the ocean. To her amazement, the whale dove down and returned moments later with the phone in its mouth.
Mansika was overjoyed and grateful, even though the water damage had made the phone unusable. “I love animals!” she said. “The whale is so kind.” The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, with people marveling at the whale’s considerate behavior.
Officials are now considering a plan to relocate the whale to a sanctuary in Iceland, where he can thrive and be cared for. Given his apparent training and familiarity with humans, it’s unclear if he could survive in the wild on his own.
Regardless, the beluga whale has won the hearts of people around the world with his friendly and helpful nature, and he serves as a reminder of the remarkable intelligence and empathy of these incredible creatures.
