The Giant African Land Snail, scientifically known as Achatina achatina, Archachatina marginata, or Lissachatina fulica, is a remarkable creature. It’s capable of growing to an astonishing length, often surpassing the length of a human arm! This snail’s shell can be incredibly large, and its body can be even more massive.

A Lifelong Growth Spree

Unlike many other animals, the Giant African Land Snail continues to grow throughout its life. Even after reaching adulthood, it can still increase in size until its death. This unique characteristic sets it apart from other snail species.

A Record-Breaking Specimen

The largest recorded Giant African Land Snail, when fully extended, measured an astounding 1 foot and 3.5 inches (39.3 cm). Its shell alone was a remarkable 10.75 inches (27.3 cm) long. This incredible specimen showcases the snail’s potential for growth.

Reproductive Marvels

Giant African Land Snails are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. This allows them to reproduce with any other adult snail of the same species. These snails are incredibly prolific, laying up to 1200 eggs per year!
