A family’s quick-thinking husky is being praised after security cameras captured the dog chasing away a black bear that ran toward a child standing outside their home.
The dramatic incident unfolded as Jeffrey Tazzara’s young son was in the driveway when a black bear suddenly sprinted in their direction. Within seconds, the family’s husky reacted instinctively, rushing between the child and the approaching bear before chasing the animal away.
The bear quickly retreated, allowing the child to run safely back toward the house. The entire encounter was captured on the family’s home security camera, with the footage later drawing widespread admiration for the dog’s protective response.

Reflecting on the incident, Tazzara said the experience answered a question many pet owners have about how their dogs might react in a real emergency.
“You’re always wondering what’s going to happen if they ever need to protect you,” he said. “Now we know.”
To thank his loyal companion, Tazzara rewarded the husky with a well-earned T-bone steak after the frightening encounter.
Wildlife experts note that while many dogs instinctively react to perceived threats, confrontations with wild animals can be dangerous for both pets and people. If bears are spotted near homes, authorities generally recommend giving the animals plenty of space and contacting local wildlife officials rather than attempting to approach or chase them.
Living Safely in Bear Country
As bears increasingly wander into residential areas in search of food, wildlife officials encourage homeowners to secure garbage bins, remove outdoor food sources and supervise children and pets whenever bears have been reported nearby. Learning how to reduce attractants and respond safely during wildlife encounters helps protect both people and the animals that share their environment.
