For Casey Colvin, that fear became reality when a devastating wildfire tore through his California neighborhood — leaving him with nothing but hope.
Trapped by the Flames
On January 7, as the fast-moving Palisades Fire ripped through parts of California, Casey was at work when evacuation orders were issued. The moment he realized what was happening, he dropped everything and rushed home — even renting a bike to reach his house faster.
But by the time he arrived, nearly five hours later, it was already too late. Roads were blocked, flames surrounded the area, and emergency crews wouldn’t let anyone through, according to NBC News.
Worst of all, Casey had no idea whether his two beloved dogs were still alive inside the burning home.
A Firefighter’s Split-Second Decision
That’s when Battalion Chief Brent Pascua of Cal Fire stepped in.
Without hesitation, Pascua forced his way into Casey’s home while the fire raged around him. Inside, he found and rescued one of the dogs. But the second — a small Pomeranian named Oreo — was nowhere to be seen.
With conditions worsening, Pascua had no choice but to leave, hoping that somehow Oreo had escaped on his own.
Five Days of Fear and Waiting
For the next five agonizing days, Casey searched relentlessly. Every hour felt heavy with uncertainty. Friends, neighbors, and volunteers kept an eye out, but there were no signs of Oreo.
Then, the call came.
Someone had spotted a small dog moving through the debris of a nearby property.
Heart racing, Casey rushed to the location. He grabbed Oreo’s favorite toy and squeezed it, his voice trembling as he called out.
Moments later, a tiny, soot-covered figure squeezed through a gate — and leapt straight into his arms.
Oreo was alive.
Reporters on the scene captured the emotional moment as Casey broke down in tears.
“You’re alive! Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, God!” he cried, holding Oreo close.

“This guy saved your life,” he told his dogs. “This guy saved your life.”
Then, smiling through tears, he added, “And you look like a Ken doll!”
Brent laughed, clearly humbled, and admitted that moments like this are what keep him going.
“If that dog could talk,” he said, “he would have a story to tell. He would have a national bestseller.”
But for Casey, the moment carried deeper meaning.
“By you leaving the door open, my dogs survived,” he told Brent, his voice breaking. “My dogs would have died if it were not for you.”
