Woman wakes to 5m python beside her bed

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night, only to find a massive 5.2-meter (17-foot) python slithering through your home.

That’s exactly what happened to Trina Hibberd from Mission Beach, Queensland, when she discovered an enormous scrub python named Monty making himself comfortable inside her house.

For years, Trina had suspected a snake was living in her roof, but she never imagined it would one day decide to move into her bedroom.

On that fateful Monday morning in 2016, Monty stretched across her home, from the living room to her bedroom, knocking over a lamp and even managing to turn on a light.

Trina shared the chilling footage of the massive snake — which she described as a “kangaroo killer” — slithering over her wall paintings and hat stand.

“It’s frigging huge! Have it locked in the bedroom waiting for help… my life is never boring,” Trina wrote.

Panic quickly set in, and Trina wasted no time calling in snake expert Dave Goodwin. When he arrived, he found the 40kg (88lb) python calmly sprawled across the room like he owned the place.

”When you go near them they have this real deep gurgle in their throat, which means in other words don’t come near me,” Goodwin told BBC.

Getting Monty under control was no easy task. The moment Goodwin grabbed hold of the snake, it coiled tightly around his arm, nearly cutting off his circulation.

”He was choking my arm to death,” Goodwin later recalled.

Using expert technique, he distracted the python with tongs before safely maneuvering it into a large plastic home-brewing tub.

With Monty finally secured, the enormous intruder was removed from the home and relocated to a nearby sewage pond. Authorities hoped he would help control the area’s rat problem — turning him from a nightmare houseguest into an unexpected pest control officer.

As for Trina, she was relieved but still in shock. She suspected that the snake had been living in her roof for 10 years. Sometimes, it would slither down into her pool area for food and water before returning to the roof just before sunrise — unless it had eaten too much and got stuck. She was relieved when it was finally removed, as the snake catcher confirmed it was large enough to prey on kangaroos.

”I guess he just wanted to say hello—or maybe he’s gone a bit senile. Who knows?” she joked. One thing was certain—after years of sharing her home with a hidden giant, she was more than happy to say goodbye!
