11-Year-Old Boy Spends 100 Hours Reading To Shelter Dogs To Help Them Find Loving Homes

While many children spend their free time playing games or watching television, 11-year-old Nehemiah Turner from Jacksonville, Florida, has chosen a different way to make a difference. Through patience, compassion, and a love of reading, he has dedicated more than 100 hours to comforting homeless shelter dogs, becoming the first child to reach this milestone in the Jacksonville Humane Society’s Pawsitive Reading program.

Nehemiah joined the program in 2024 with a simple mission: to help anxious shelter dogs feel safe while they wait for their forever families. Sitting quietly outside their kennels, he reads stories aloud, giving the animals a calm and reassuring presence that can help reduce stress and build confidence around people.

The young volunteer says one of the most rewarding parts of the experience is knowing his time may help the dogs become more relaxed and increase their chances of being adopted.

“I like to help them get adopted,” Nehemiah said. “One of my favorite dogs was Hopper. He would sit down after I started reading to him. Another favorite was Augie, the very first dog I ever read to.”

Animal welfare experts often encourage gentle interactions such as reading because a calm human voice can help nervous shelter animals become more comfortable without overwhelming them. For many dogs, these quiet moments can make a meaningful difference after experiencing uncertainty or abandonment.

The Jacksonville Humane Society recently celebrated Nehemiah’s remarkable achievement in a social media post, recognizing both his commitment and the positive impact he has made on countless animals waiting for new homes. His inspiring story has also been featured in Kind News, a national magazine that teaches children about kindness toward animals, as well as on the television program River City Live.

Although Nehemiah’s goal began with reading books, it has grown into something much bigger—a reminder that small acts of compassion can have a lasting impact. His dedication shows that helping animals doesn’t always require grand gestures; sometimes, simply sharing a story can offer comfort, build trust, and give a shelter dog a better chance at finding a loving family.
