Police in Cornwall have launched an appeal for witnesses following reports that a seagull was allegedly attacked on the seafront in the popular coastal town of St Ives.

The incident, which reportedly occurred near the harbor during a busy afternoon, sparked widespread outrage after eyewitness accounts and photographs began circulating on social media.

According to several witnesses, a seagull swooped down and attempted to take food from a visitor before an altercation occurred between the man and the bird. Individuals who were present at the scene alleged that the seagull suffered severe injuries during the incident.

The man who is alleged to have punched the seagull was quickly identified online as pro-Palestine advocate Jonathan ‘Jonny’ Roberts from Bradford, Yorkshire

Witnesses described seeing members of the public confront the man following the encounter, while others attempted to assist the injured bird.

The reports quickly attracted attention online, with social media users expressing shock and concern over the alleged treatment of the animal. Several witnesses said the incident took place in front of families and children visiting the busy tourist destination.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they are seeking information and any available video footage that may help establish exactly what happened.

Authorities noted that while the incident generated significant discussion online, investigators are encouraging anyone who directly witnessed the event or captured footage to contact police.

Herring gulls are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, offenders can face unlimited fines and up to six months in prison

The case has also renewed discussion about interactions between humans and seabirds in coastal communities. St Ives, like many seaside towns across the United Kingdom, experiences frequent encounters between visitors and gulls, which are known for attempting to take food from tourists.

Wildlife experts emphasize that while such incidents can be frustrating, protected bird species remain safeguarded under wildlife legislation, and members of the public are encouraged to respond to wildlife encounters in a safe and lawful manner.

Investigations into the reported incident remain ongoing.

Wildlife conservation organizations continue to highlight the importance of protecting native bird populations and promoting responsible human-wildlife interactions. Seabirds play a vital role in coastal ecosystems, while growing tourism in seaside destinations has increased encounters between people and wildlife. Experts recommend public education, wildlife protection programs, conservation initiatives and responsible tourism practices as effective ways to reduce conflicts while safeguarding vulnerable animal species and their habitats.
