Human Leaves Deaf Shelter Puppy With a Toy in Her Kennel, Only To Find Her Cuddling It Later

Life inside an animal shelter can be overwhelming, especially for senior dogs stripped of familiar comforts. For Aulani, an eight-year-old deaf dog waiting for a home, a simple gesture of kindness showed just how deeply shelter animals crave security.

A Quiet Surprise

Aulani may technically qualify as a senior, but shelter volunteers still affectionately refer to her as a “pup” due to her gentle demeanor and easygoing spirit. Because of her complete hearing loss, she often sleeps deeply, unaffected by the echoes and barking typical of kennel environments.

During a routine walk-through, a shelter volunteer noticed Aulani asleep on the concrete floor near her empty food bowl. Carrying a brand-new yellow duck plushie, the volunteer opted not to wake her. Instead, they quietly slid the soft toy right against her front paws, collected her empty bowl, and let her rest undisturbed.

The Return to Kennel Row

When the volunteer stepped back into Aulani’s run an hour later to see if she had noticed the toy, they found her in a completely different spot.

Aulani had moved over to her raised bed. Rather than shredding the toy, she had carried the duck with her, resting her chin directly across it and using the plushie as a pillow. The quiet scene quickly struck a chord online after the volunteer shared the clip, remarking that seeing her snuggled up with the gift made their heart “break and melt at the same time.” Within days, the video gathered more than 215,000 likes.

The Importance of Kennel Enrichment

Beyond the sentimental appeal of the video, animal behaviorists emphasize that soft toys and plush items serve a functional role in shelter settings:

  • Sensory Soothing: For deaf pets, tactile comfort replaces auditory cues, grounding them in times of stress.
  • Decompression Aids: Cuddling soft surfaces lowers cortisol levels, helping dogs transition more smoothly between kennel confinement and rest.
  • Familiar Scent Markers: Holding onto a single personal item provides a stable anchor in an environment with high turnover and constant noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are deaf dogs more difficult to adopt and manage than hearing dogs?

Not necessarily. Deaf dogs respond exceptionally well to hand signals, vibration collars, and routine body language cues. In quiet indoor environments, they often adapt just as quickly as hearing dogs.

Why do older dogs struggle more in shelter environments?

Senior pets typically take longer to be adopted and struggle with the physical strain of kennel living, such as cold flooring affecting stiff joints and heightened sensitivity to disruptions.

Can plush toys be dangerous for shelter dogs?

Shelters monitor how dogs interact with plushies. Dogs prone to swallowing fabric or squeakers are given durable rubber chew toys instead, while gentle cuddlers like Aulani are allowed soft plush items for warmth.
