Illustrator Captures the Discoveries She Makes During Her Outdoor Adventures

Many artists are inspired by the natural world’s unique beauty. Jo Brown, a British illustrator, uses her colorful Nature Journals to record the findings she discovers throughout her outdoor adventures. Each notebook page is filled with beautiful drawings and observations of flora and creatures she encounters in the Devon countryside. Brown’s full-bleed pictures take up the whole page, which makes her Nature Journals extremely eye-catching. Her colorful compositions appear to burst off the page as a result of this.

Brown began the notebook “because she wanted to document the things she was learning as she found them because nature is one of the most important things in her life,” according to her website. Her portfolio includes detailed drawings of carnivorous plants, microscopic insects, and native birds. Brown believes that much of the wildlife she shows can be found with “a little patience and quiet study,” and that she didn’t have to search far to discover them.

Brown captures her topics in stunning detail with a combination of fine-nib pens and colored pencils. She frequently incorporates close-up views of individual components, such as minute bug eggs, similar to scientific representations. Brown includes instructive jottings about the flora and wildlife around the border of the illustrations, giving the Latin names of each species.
