A Couple is Shocked to Learn That Their ‘Baby Watermelon’ is Actually an Animal

Bjrn-Gunnar Lunde was out trekking with his wife, taking in the scenery and appreciating nature. His gaze went down to the ground at one point, and he suddenly observed the oddest thing on his wife’s shoe.

It resembled a miniature watermelon or a little, malformed cucumber. However, upon closer study, the pair discovered that the small creature was, in fact, a spider.

“We could see that it was a little spider, and it had begun to spin a web,” Lunde explained to The Dodo. “We placed it gently on the ground where I shot the photograph.”

The weird little spider does resemble a tiny fruit or vegetable rather than an animal, which is how they received the name cucumber spider.

These strangely charming spiders are prevalent in portions of Europe, North America, and Central Asia between May and September and are frequently difficult to notice due to how well they mix in with their surroundings. They are that lovely green color for a reason. They spin webs between leaves and flowers and prefer to stay low to the ground, which is why this one was discovered on someone’s shoe.

Cucumber spiders don’t utilize a hideout, but they’re great at hiding in plain sight or confounding people long enough to get away, so it’s very cool that Lunde and his wife spotted one.

“I’ve seen similar spiders previously, but not frequently,” Lunde explained.

The small spider eventually proceeded on her way, creeping along the trail like a miniature walking cantaloupe. What a beautiful sight.
