Bing Xing the giant panda, the Madrid Zoo’s most famous resident, relished watermelon popsicles on Wednesday that keepers offered to keep him and other animals cool as temperatures in Spain soared past 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) amid a searing heatwave.
Bing Xing, whose name means “star of ice,” excitedly chewed on frozen fruit on a stick in addition to his daily quota of 50 kg of fresh bamboo.
Depending on their diet, predatory animals like lions or seals were given popsicles made of beef or fish. Animals were also splashed with water by zoo keepers.
Although the heatwave’s climax is anticipated for Thursday, several areas of Spain are already on high alert for the weather’s extremes, and many wildfires are raging as a result of the high temperatures.
