Orangutan Desperately Tries to Stop Excavator Destroying His Home in Heartbreaking Scene

An orangutan fought bravely against an excavator that was destroying his home, in a heartbreaking scene that highlights the devastation caused by deforestation in Indonesia. As the machine brought down a pile of cut trees, the desperate animal tried to stop it with his hands, clinging onto the cold metal before slipping and falling into the debris below. The entire forest around him had been destroyed, leaving him with nowhere to go.

The Sungai Putri Forest, where the incident occurred, is a critical habitat for the endangered Bornean orangutan, one of the few homes left for these animals. However, it is under threat from the expansion of palm oil plantations and other development projects, which have caused the orangutan population to plummet. Many of these apes are left to starve and die as their habitats are destroyed.

International Animal Rescue (IAR) was able to save the orangutan caught in the video and relocate him to a remote, protected area of forest. However, this is just a small victory in a much larger battle. Since the 1970s, Bornean orangutans have lost more than half of their natural habitats due to logging operations and deforestation. The situation has become so dire that many mother orangutans have to build nests to raise their babies in areas where illegal logging settlements exist.

As Karmele Llano Sanchez, program director of IAR in Indonesia, warns, we are at a critical point for the Bornean orangutan. Without forests like the Sungai Putri, they cannot survive. IAR is working hard to protect these precious apes, but they need all the help they can get as forests continue to be destroyed by development. Scenes like this one are becoming more and more frequent, and it is up to us to take action before it’s too late.
