Where in the world would you go if you weren’t required to pay for lodging? Madolline Gourley, an Australian writer, discovered a cunning travel trick that enables her to trade cat-sitting services for a place to stay. Gourley has thus been able to travel the length of Australia and the United States for the price of her airfare.

“Since I learned about house sitting a few years ago, I’ve been able to stay in places across the United States and Australia for dirt cheap. In exchange for lodging, you house or pet sit for “free,” according to Gourley. The 31-year-old writer uses TrustedHouseSitters to locate gigs, where her decades of cat-care knowledge helps her stand out against the stiff competition. One Cat At a Time is the name of her personal blog, where she writes about her various travels and responds to inquiries from readers on how they too can get started. Gourley calculates that she has already saved close to $28,000 on hotel expenses.

“Although I’ve saved hundreds of dollars by house and pet sitting for strangers, I still need money to cover costs like my travel to and from sits. This means that I work a typical Monday–Friday job in Brisbane, Australia, saving money for my next journey during the other, less interesting half of my life, she writes on her website. The most recent journey made by Gourley was a 75-day journey from Seattle to Brooklyn through the United States. “In seven different cities around the nation, I’ve taken care of 15 animals and 9 different homes.

I started out in Seattle before moving on to Austin, Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, and Portland. In New York City, I got sits in Chelsea, South Park Slope, and Prospect Heights. She has a lengthy vacation to Canada next on her agenda.
