A blind eel, deep-sea batfishes, spiderfish, and other creatures were discovered and revealed on an Australian seafloor.

The deep-sea batfish is one of several previously unknown creatures discovered beneath the Indian Ocean’s surface near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park.

For the first time, a team of scientists from the Museums Victoria Research Institute detailed mapped the region across nearly 7,000 miles.

Flat-topped sea mountains with volcanic cones, sharp ridges, and canyons were revealed by the project.

The blind eel with loose, transparent skin, pelican and slender snipe eels, highfin lizardfish, and other newly discovered sea life were also discovered.

According to the expedition’s chief scientist, this represents the discovery of “an amazing number of potentially new species” living in the Marine Park.
