In a rare and incredible incident, a doorbell camera in Texas captured the moment a half-ton meteor crashed, creating a sonic boom that shook the neighborhood. The footage, which was later confirmed by NASA, shows the bright light of the meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere and breaking apart before it crashed near McAllen, Texas.
The event occurred on February 15th and was recorded by a doorcam in a residential area. In the video, one can see a peaceful Texas yard suddenly being illuminated by the bright light of the meteor, followed by a deafening sonic boom that sends birds flying off in a frenzy.
NASA released a statement confirming the incident and assuring the public that there was no risk to their safety. Although meteorites tend to hit Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, they slow down as they travel through the atmosphere and break into small fragments before hitting the ground. Meteorites cool rapidly and are generally not a risk to the public.
The event was also captured by a Geostationary Lightning Mapper, which is usually used to map lightning. The lightning mapper’s image showed a bright flash of light that was not associated with any thunderstorm activity in the area.
The incident left many viewers in awe and shock, with some commenting on how quickly animals can pick up on danger cues, while others joked about the possibility of explaining a meteor crash to an insurance company.
The meteor crash serves as a reminder of the need for increased efforts to understand and protect Earth, and to promote space missions that mitigate risk. The incredible footage captured by the doorbell camera is a testament to the incredible technology that allows us to witness such rare and extraordinary events.
