Black Canada Lynx Caught on Camera for the First Time

A truly extraordinary discovery has stunned the wildlife community — a black Canada lynx has been captured on camera for the first time in history.

The Canada Lynx (Lynx canadensis) is a secretive feline native to the forests of North America, most commonly found across Canada and the northern United States. Known for its thick, silvery-gray fur and tufted ears, this wild cat is perfectly adapted to cold, snowy environments. However, a dark-furred version — known as a melanistic lynx — had never been documented on film until now.

In 2022, Thomas Jung, a researcher with the Government of Yukon and the University of Alberta, recorded the once-in-a-lifetime footage in a rural area near Whitehorse, Yukon. The lynx was about 50 meters away, calmly observing its surroundings before quietly retreating after a nearby dog barked.

The discovery was later detailed in Mammalia under the title “Paint It Black: First Record of Melanism in Canada Lynx (Lynx canadensis)”. The rare animal’s coat displayed a blend of black fur with grayish guard hairs — a striking contrast to the silvery shades typically seen in winter.

Researchers suggest that this color variation could be an evolutionary mutation that is likely maladaptive, as the darker fur provides poor camouflage in snowy terrain. Still, this rare sighting offers new insight into the genetic diversity and adaptability of the lynx species.

Protecting Rare Wildlife Through Innovation

The discovery of the black Canada lynx highlights how advanced wildlife research technology, genetic mapping, and AI-powered tracking systems are revolutionizing our understanding of nature. Today, eco-conservation programs and wildlife grants support projects that combine drone monitoring, thermal imaging, and environmental DNA sampling to uncover hidden species and protect fragile ecosystems.

If you’re passionate about nature and want to experience such wonders firsthand, consider supporting eco-tourism in Canada — or donating to verified wildlife protection initiatives that fund research and habitat preservation. These programs not only protect biodiversity but also generate sustainable travel opportunities that benefit both local communities and global conservation efforts.

Wow! We can’t believe such a unique creature was caught on camera. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
