A colossal wall of ice has made its way to the shores of the Canadian island, Newfoundland, sparking a flurry of responses on Twitter. This region is renowned for “iceberg chasing,” a fascinating phenomenon where tourists eagerly seek to witness these majestic icy giants up close whenever they appear along the famous “Iceberg Alley.” This stretch of water runs next to the eastern coast of the province, Newfoundland and Labrador, offering stunning views of these natural wonders.
Around 90% of the icebergs in the region originate from Greenland’s glaciers, while the rest come from Canada’s Arctic. During the summer, as temperatures rise, chunks of ice break off from the larger ice sheets, giving birth to these behemoth icebergs that usually last for a few months.
The yearly spectacle attracts attention from all around the coast, with these glacial masses displaying a range of colors, from snow-white to dazzling aquamarine, as described on the province’s official website.
These icebergs are not only visually stunning but can also be of massive proportions. In 2021, the largest one ever recorded measured a staggering 135 kilometers in length and 25 kilometers in width as it headed towards South Georgia.
While the presence of icebergs in the region is nothing new, their increased frequency is a cause for concern, reflecting the impact of the ongoing climate crisis on the Earth’s ice caps. A 2019 study from the US Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that Greenland’s glaciers are melting four times faster than previously estimated.
On July 21 of this year, the US Coast Guard and International Ice Patrol, an organization established after the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912, estimated that there are 2,065 icebergs north of the Labrador region, all adrift in open water. Though it may sound like a substantial number, experts comparing this year’s data to the past few decades have noted that this figure is mostly below normal for the region. They predict that only 380 of these icebergs are likely to drift further south.
