Archaeologists have uncovered a remarkable Mayan artifact—a 1,500-year-old ceramic figure with a removable helmet in El Perú-Waka, Petén, Guatemala. This discovery provides a glimpse into ancient Mayan culture and their intricate rituals.
The artifact is part of a larger scene involving 23 ceramic figurines arranged in a circular configuration within a royal tomb chamber. The scene depicts a deceased king, his loyal animal spirit companion, and other royalty. The deer on the figure’s pendant symbolizes the king’s journey through the underworld to his resurrection.
This discovery sheds light on the rich cultural and spiritual practices of the ancient Maya and highlights the ongoing efforts to protect this archaeological site from threats like looting and encroachment.
The artifact is now on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, offering visitors a unique window into the Maya’s rich history.
