Flat Earthers’ Attempt To Sail To The Edge Of The World Ends In Massive Disappointment

The concept of a flat Earth has long been debunked by scientific evidence, with numerous ways to prove our planet’s spherical nature. From watching ships disappear over the horizon to observing Earth from the International Space Station, the evidence is overwhelming.

Nevertheless, there are those who remain steadfast in their belief in a flat Earth, embarking on misguided quests to reach the alleged edge of our world. In a recent example, a couple from Venice, Italy, decided to undertake such a journey, convinced that the Earth was flat, and its edge was somewhere near Sicily.

Despite Italy’s COVID-19 lockdown, this adventurous couple set out on a mission to prove their flat Earth theory. Little did they know that their endeavor was bound for disappointment from the start. Ignoring travel restrictions, they left their home region, sold their car, and acquired a boat for their quest.

Their destination was Lampedusa, an island located in the Mediterranean Sea. In the flat Earther’s perspective, Lampedusa was seen as the literal edge of the Earth. However, the trip’s inherent flaws quickly became apparent. First, choosing a year during a global pandemic, when most of the world was urged to stay at home, was far from ideal.

Armed with a compass, a navigational tool that operates on the premise of a spherical Earth, the couple set sail through the Pelagie Islands with the hope of reaching their intended destination. Unsurprisingly, their plans quickly unraveled. It became evident that selling their car and impulsively pursuing the end of the world had not been well-thought-out. Lost, fatigued, and disoriented, they washed ashore on the island of Ustica.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, health officials placed the couple in quarantine. But their unwavering determination to reach the Earth’s edge led to a daring escape, with the belief that law enforcement’s authority would cease at the boundary between Earth and the vacuum of space. Their second escape attempt was short-lived, as they were apprehended just three hours later.

“A few days later, they tried to escape again. They ended up in the home of a mythomaniac who claimed to be positive for Covid but luckily he was not,” explained Salvatore Zichichi of the Maritime Health Office of the Ministry of Health.

In the end, their quest for the edge of the world left them dejected and disillusioned. They returned to their part of the globe, leaving behind the unattainable edge they had sought in vain. The story serves as a poignant reminder of the persistence of false beliefs in a world abundant with scientific evidence to the contrary.
