An American woman said she was shocked to discover that Alaska isn’t actually an island, calling for an ‘overhaul’ of the school curriculum

In a recent viral TikTok video, an American woman expressed her shock at the revelation that Alaska is not an island and, contrary to her belief, can be accessed by road. The admission sparked a wave of similar confessions from viewers, both American and Canadian, highlighting a widespread misconception about the geographical nature of the largest U.S. state.

The TikToker, Sabriena Abrre, shared her surprising realization during a conversation with her Canadian boyfriend. In the video posted on October 26, she candidly admitted, “Everybody knows that Alaska is cold, but did I know that it was connected by land? No. I did not know that.” She further disclosed her misconception about the size of Alaska, confessing that she had previously thought Texas was larger than the northern state.

The confusion surrounding Alaska’s geography seems to stem from its representation on U.S. maps, where it is often displayed as an island, separate from the mainland. Abrre pointed out that this misrepresentation in educational materials contributes to the misunderstanding and emphasized the need for a comprehensive revision of the school curriculum. “The curriculum obviously needs some help. We need a good revision — an overhaul of the entire curriculum at this point,” she remarked.

The video garnered significant attention, amassing over 819,000 views, with a mix of reactions from viewers. Many Canadians expressed their bewilderment at the revelation, while numerous Americans admitted to sharing the same misconception. One TikTok user, Haley Hopkins, commented that the video made her realize Alaska is not an island, expressing embarrassment over her previous lack of awareness.

A viewer who identified as a teacher shared insights into the persistence of this misconception, stating that they had heard similar revelations from adults and always made a point to clarify the geography to their students.

The widespread misunderstanding of Alaska’s geography is not a unique phenomenon. Business Insider previously reported on various misconceptions about the state, attributing them in part to its portrayal in popular culture, with TV shows like “Ice Road Truckers” and “The Deadliest Catch” depicting extreme conditions that may not accurately represent the state’s overall climate.

Alaska, despite its portrayal in pop culture, experiences diverse weather conditions. While the common perception is that it is freezing cold year-round, temperatures can reach up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Additionally, while grizzly and black bears are relatively common, polar bears are typically only found along the state’s arctic coastlines.

In light of the widespread misconception highlighted by Abrre’s TikTok video, discussions about the need for an educational overhaul gain traction, emphasizing the importance of accurate geographic knowledge in the school curriculum.
