Giant and Protective: The Malaysian Earthtiger Tarantula with Young

The Malaysian earthtiger tarantula (Haplopelma dorset), also known as the Goliath birdeater, is one of the world’s largest spider species. This impressive arachnid boasts a leg span that can reach up to 30 centimeters (almost 12 inches) and a body mass exceeding 170 grams (6 ounces).

This article features a photo of a female earthtiger tarantula spotted with its young. The image showcases the maternal side of this giant spider. Female earthtigers are known for their fierce devotion to their offspring. After laying hundreds of eggs, they meticulously care for the spiderlings, carrying them on their backs until they are old enough to fend for themselves.

Despite their imposing size, earthtiger tarantulas are not typically aggressive towards humans. They prefer to avoid confrontation and will only use their fangs or urticating bristles (hairs) as a last resort if they feel threatened.
