Medical experts are urging people to seek professional advice if they notice unusual changes in the colour of their toenails, warning that it could indicate an underlying health issue.
According to specialists in Podiatry, certain types of nail discolouration should not be ignored—particularly when accompanied by pain or changes in nail structure.
Experts say one of the most concerning signs is a dark streak or patch on the nail, which in some cases may be linked to Melanoma, a serious form of cancer. A specific type, known as Subungual melanoma, develops beneath the nail and can be difficult to detect early.

This condition may appear as a dark vertical band on a single nail and is sometimes mistaken for bruising, fungal infection, or injury. However, specialists warn that delays in diagnosis can significantly increase health risks.
Additional warning signs can include nail splitting, bleeding, persistent pain, discharge, or nails that do not heal properly after injury. In some cases, the nail may also thicken, separate from the nail bed, or change shape.
Doctors note that not all nail discolouration is linked to cancer. Other conditions may also be responsible. Yellow or brown spots can be associated with psoriasis, while certain colour patterns may indicate issues such as kidney or liver disease. Green discolouration, for example, may be caused by bacterial infection.

If concerning symptoms are present, medical professionals may recommend further tests, including a biopsy, to determine the cause. Early diagnosis is considered critical in managing serious conditions effectively.
Health specialists emphasise that paying attention to small physical changes—such as nail colour or texture—can play an important role in detecting health problems at an early stage.
Rising awareness of early disease detection is driving increased demand for dermatology services, cancer screening programs, telemedicine consultations, health insurance plans, and diagnostic testing technologies, making preventive healthcare one of the fastest-growing and highest-value sectors in modern medicine.
