When rescuers first saw Sinclair, many people online told them to let him go. The dog had other plans.
A Stray Alone in a Field
In February 2021, a stranger found a stray dog lying in a field in Texas. He was hypothermic, starving and dehydrated, covered in severe wounds and a serious skin condition, and showing signs of mistreatment. The finder rushed him to the Waco Animal Shelter, where the New York Bully Crew, a nonprofit pit bull rescue group based in New York, stepped in to take him on.
The rescue later described Sinclair as having the worst case of mange it had ever seen. Mange is a skin disease caused by mites, and in severe cases it leaves dogs raw, itchy and vulnerable to infection.
“Put Him Down” — and the Rescuers Who Refused
After the group shared Sinclair’s condition online, countless people urged them to euthanize him. The rescue said it knew he was a fighter. “We could never give up on him,” the New York Bully Crew wrote on Facebook. It later told those critics they were wrong, adding that the rescue always fights alongside the dogs and not against them.
Sinclair was rushed to an emergency animal hospital, where his skin was so damaged that even giving him fluids was difficult. Veterinarians feared for his life.
Ninety Days of Healing
Sinclair’s turnaround began quickly:
- Day 2: He left his kennel and ate his first real meal in days.
- Day 4: He was off IV fluids and had a healthy appetite.
- Day 5: His affectionate side appeared. He gave kisses and wagged his tail.
- Day 9: After moving to Pearl’s Place, a medical rescue in Texas, he greeted staff with a wagging tail.
- Day 12: He had gained weight and was playing with toys and solving puppy puzzles.

Pearl’s Place, a registered nonprofit, specializes in special-needs dogs such as those with demodectic mange and infections of the skin. Under the care of a woman named Lisa and her team, Sinclair’s wounds healed, his fur grew back and he began to trust people again.
A Forever Home in New York
On Day 90, Sinclair was adopted. He now lives in New York with his best friend Jessel, in a home full of play and affection. As the rescue put it, his journey went from a suffering puppy in a field to a cherished member of a family.
