A devastating fire at a children’s mini zoo in England has resulted in the deaths of all animals housed inside the facility, according to emergency officials.

Firefighters were called to The Jungle Box, a family entertainment and soft-play center in Buntingford, Hertfordshire, during the early hours of the morning after a major blaze broke out at the site.

Emergency crews arrived to find the building engulfed in flames, prompting a large-scale response involving multiple fire engines and specialist equipment. Firefighters worked for hours to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring businesses within the industrial estate.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to The Jungle Box on the Watermill Industrial Estate in Buntingford at around 3.20am on Wednesday

Authorities later confirmed that a number of animals housed within the facility did not survive.

The Jungle Box had recently expanded its attractions to include a small animal and exotic species area featuring meerkats, giant tortoises, snakes, iguanas, owls and genets. The attraction had become popular with local families, offering visitors the opportunity to observe and interact with a variety of animals alongside its indoor play areas.

Tragically, the fire service revealed that the soft play centre housed a number of small animals, none of which survived

Officials said no people were injured in the incident, and the building was unoccupied when the fire began.

Images released following the incident showed extensive damage to the structure, with large sections of the facility destroyed by the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet announced what may have triggered the incident.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from local residents, visitors and animal lovers, many of whom expressed sadness over the loss of the animals. Neighboring businesses and community members also offered support to those affected by the destruction of the facility.

Ten fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the building

Fire officials praised the efforts of emergency crews who worked to bring the blaze under control and protect surrounding properties from further damage.

As investigators continue their work, the incident has raised renewed discussion about fire prevention measures, emergency preparedness and the challenges of protecting animals housed within commercial facilities.

The soft play centre was also home to a large snake

Animal welfare experts emphasize the importance of advanced fire safety systems, emergency evacuation planning and disaster preparedness protocols in facilities that house animals. Zoos, wildlife centers, animal sanctuaries and educational attractions often rely on specialized safety infrastructure designed to protect both animals and staff during emergencies. Conservation organizations say continued investment in animal welfare, facility safety standards and emergency response planning is essential for preventing future tragedies and safeguarding vulnerable species in human care.
