Encounters with wildlife in their natural habitat often leave lasting impressions, but every so often, an experience unfolds that feels truly extraordinary.
Scuba diver Gary Grayson was exploring the clear waters near the Isles of Scilly, off the southwest coast of England, when he noticed movement in the distance. Two gray seals were swimming effortlessly through the kelp-covered seabed, clearly aware of his presence.
While one of the seals remained cautious, keeping a respectful distance, the other appeared calm, curious, and completely unbothered by the diver or his equipment. Instead of fleeing, the seal slowly circled Gary, studying him with wide, intelligent eyes.
Moments later, the animal swam directly toward him and gently pressed its nose against his mask. Unsure of the seal’s intentions, Gary stayed still and extended his hand, careful not to make any sudden movements.
What happened next was something even an experienced diver like Gary had never seen before.
The seal softly wrapped its flipper around his hand and guided it toward its belly, clearly signaling that it wanted attention. The playful marine mammal lingered there, enjoying the interaction, while another seal soon joined in, brushing against Gary’s leg and adding to the surreal moment.
“This gray seal stayed with me for several minutes,” Gary later recalled. “Then another one climbed up my leg. I’ve been diving for years, but nothing has ever come close to this. I’ve had some intense experiences underwater, but this was on another level.”
Marine biologists explain that gray seals are among the most intelligent marine mammals, known for their strong social bonds and natural curiosity. When they feel safe and unthreatened, they can display surprisingly affectionate behavior, especially toward calm humans who respect their space.
