Many people dream of having a dog. And it’s easy to understand why — dogs are loyal, loving, and truly live up to the title of “man’s best friend.” But there’s one thing everyone needs to remember before getting a dog: they’re not just pets. They’re family.
You don’t just give up on a family member when life gets busy. You don’t abandon them when it’s no longer convenient.
Two torn trash bags
Sadly, that’s exactly what happened to Wall-E.
Wall-E was first adopted from the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shelter in 2015. He found a home filled with love and safety — the kind every dog deserves.
But one day, everything changed.
Out of nowhere, Wall-E’s bed and toys were packed into two torn trash bags. Then, without understanding why, the 6-year-old Labrador mix was taken back to a shelter — this time, to Arizona’s MCACC shelter. His former owner stood crying as he said goodbye, but that did little to comfort the confused dog.
Wall-E didn’t understand. He just knew he was suddenly alone.
“He was surrendered by his family because they did not have enough time for him,” said Jordan Bader, who runs the MCACC – West Adoptable Dogs Facebook page, in an interview with The Dodo.
“He was very scared. In his kennel, he would bark and bark.”
Became depressed
The shelter was unfamiliar, cold, and loud. Worst of all, there was no space for Wall-E’s toys. Everything that had brought him comfort was gone.
Wall-E became depressed.
He sat quietly in his kennel, withdrawn and confused. When visitors came looking to adopt, they passed right by him. Two months went by. No one chose him.
But the shelter staff knew how special he was. They refused to give up.
When Wall-E was dropped off with all his belongings, staff had snapped a photo of him sitting beside the bags. That heartbreaking image — a dog abandoned with all his worldly possessions in garbage bags — told his story better than words ever could. They decided to share it on Facebook.
“Here is Wall-E when he was getting surrendered by his owner 😞 They brought all his stuff… like it was gonna be there with him forever.”

The response was overwhelming.
“We knew this picture would be heartbreaking and would get a lot of attention, but we had no idea it would blow up like it did. We had so many people interested in him,” Jordan Bader said.
One person deeply moved by the photo was Lynn Lee.
She rushed to the shelter to meet Wall-E — and brought her own dog along to see how they’d get along. The dogs clicked instantly.
That was all she needed to see. Wall-E finally went home — to a place where he’d be safe, loved, and never left behind again.
A new life
Today, Wall-E is thriving in his new home. Lynn frequently shares updates, showing the happy dog soaking up the sun, snuggling, and living his best life.
“They have been amazing,” Bader noted. “Wall-E gets along great with the family, loves dog parks and cuddling.”
Wall-E’s story is a powerful reminder that animals are not disposable. They’re not toys you throw out when you get bored. They’re living beings who feel fear, loneliness, and love — just like us.
