Driver Thinks Hawk Has A Squirrel — But The Truth Makes Her Hit The Brakes

A routine drive through Alabama turned into a dramatic animal rescue when one woman realised a red-tailed hawk’s prey was not a squirrel, but a tiny kitten moments from death.

Lucy Bolton was driving to her parents’ home when she noticed two hawks standing in the road ahead. At first glance, the scene seemed ordinary — one of the birds appeared to be clutching a small grey animal.

But as she drew closer, the truth was far more shocking.

A horrifying discovery on the roadside

Lucy initially assumed the hawk had caught a squirrel.

Instead, she discovered the predator was gripping a defenceless grey kitten.

Without hesitation, she stopped her car and rushed to intervene.

As Lucy approached, the hawk attempted to escape with the kitten in its talons, but dropped the terrified animal onto the curb before flying away.

What happened next was a desperate race to save the tiny survivor.

A rescue in the nick of time

Though injured and terrified, the kitten was still alive.

Lucy carefully scooped him up as he hissed and clawed in fear — a natural response from an animal that had just endured a near-fatal attack.

Realising the kitten needed immediate help, she contacted Woof Ave Rescue, an Alabama-based nonprofit known for rescuing vulnerable animals.

The rescue team responded immediately.

Lucy Bolton

A remarkably lucky survivor

Despite the brutal encounter, the kitten’s injuries were surprisingly minor.

Aside from scratches and understandable shock, he was expected to recover.

His rescuers named him “Hawk” — a fitting reminder of the extraordinary circumstances that nearly ended his life before it had truly begun.

Now safe in rescue care, Hawk is recovering, socialising with other rescued cats, and preparing for the loving home he almost never had the chance to find.

Lucy Bolton

One moment that changed everything

For Hawk, survival came down to seconds.

Had Lucy arrived even slightly later, the outcome may have been tragic.

Her quick decision to stop transformed what could have been a brutal end into the beginning of a second chance.

Nature can be breathtaking, but it can also be unforgiving — and for one tiny kitten on an Alabama roadside, survival depended entirely on a stranger arriving at exactly the right moment. Lucy Bolton’s split-second choice did more than interrupt a predator; it rewrote the fate of a helpless life. In a world where countless animals go unseen, Hawk’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes compassion, timing, and courage can mean the difference between tragedy and hope.
