For Bald Eagle Appreciation Day, we’ve compiled our favorite images of these iconic raptors.

THE COMEBACK These Alaskan birds appeared in a July 2002 National Geographic article about the resurgence of bald eagles.Even after the United States passed a law in 1940 making it illegal to kill or harm a bald eagle, numbers continued to decline because of the use of DDT, a pesticide. Thirty years after the U.S. banned the use of DDT, bald eagles were able to make a comeback. PHOTOGRAPH BY NORBERT ROSING, NAT GEO IMAGE COLLECTION
EAGLE AND EAGLET An eagle calls out from its nest in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.Bald eagles usually return to and enlarge their nests every year. A nest may be as wide as ten feet (three meters) and weigh as much as a half ton.

PICTURE PERFECTIn this month’s National Geographic, Klaus Nigge writes that photographers “tend to portray [bald eagles] as these majestic animals, always soaring in a blue sky with their plumage perfectly in place.” Two impeccable examples of his thought fly over Haines, Alaska.
