Gas station receives backlash after posting alarming notice on its door: ‘How could this possibly be legal?’

A gas station in Tucson, Arizona, is facing heavy criticism online after a sign posted on its door appeared to ban customers who arrive on foot.

For decades, the phrase “No shoes, no shirt, no service” has been a common rule in many businesses across the United States. The saying became popular during the 1960s and 1970s as stores began setting basic standards for customer behavior and appearance.

But a recently shared video suggests some businesses may be taking their rules much further.

A TikTok video originally posted by user Truly (@trulyknowsmusic) shows a sign on the door of a gas station that reads:

“No walkers allowed. Must arrive in vehicle to enter store. We have the right to refuse service to anyone.”

The video quickly spread online after being reposted in a Reddit community that discusses the negative impacts of car dependency and supports alternative transportation options.

The caption over the video reads: “That’s messed up.”

Many viewers were shocked by the rule, especially as conversations about climate change and sustainable transportation continue to grow.

In the United States, cities are heavily designed around cars, which has significantly influenced how people travel. Research from Virginia Tech and Rutgers University found that only about 12% of trips in the U.S. are made by walking, one of the lowest walking rates in the world.

This statistic becomes even more surprising when considering that about 30% of all trips in the U.S. are less than 1.6 miles, a distance many people could easily walk.

Transportation is also a major contributor to environmental pollution. According to data cited by the Union of Concerned Scientists, gasoline-powered transportation accounts for more than 20% of the climate-warming pollution in the United States each year.

Because of this, environmental experts and organizations such as the United Nations have repeatedly emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning toward cleaner energy sources like wind and solar power.

Walking, cycling, and other forms of active transportation are widely considered healthier for individuals and far better for the planet.

For many online users, the gas station sign seemed to send the opposite message.

“If anything, this country could use signs that encourage people not to drive,” one commenter wrote.

Another user questioned whether the rule was even legal, asking: “How could this possibly be legal?”

As discussions about climate change, clean energy, and sustainable transportation continue worldwide, many experts encourage communities to rethink how people move through cities. Reducing reliance on gasoline vehicles, improving walkability, and supporting eco-friendly transportation options can help lower carbon emissions while improving public health. Investments in green infrastructure and renewable energy solutions are increasingly seen as essential steps toward a more sustainable future.
