Man moves into new house and finds abandoned dog in basement – dog’s reaction says everything

There are many things one might expect to find upon moving into a new place. A dog isn’t one of them.

And yet, for one new home owner in St. Louis, that’s exactly what happened. No sooner had he been handed the keys to a house, did he find a beautiful dog chained up in the basement and left to die.

After receiving a panicked call from a man claiming to have found a pitbull chained up in his basement, rescue workers arrived and shined a torch down into the darkness. The dog’s reaction is something to behold …

Apparently, the new owner told staff at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, “I just bought a house and there is a pit bull chained up in the basement. I’m not sure how long it’s been down there.”

Being that the new owners had no idea how long the dog had been down there, alone in the darkness, time was of great importance. Volunteers rushed to the house to rescue the animal, and boy was he happy to see them.

“When we opened the door to the basement and shined our flashlight down, we saw a wagging tail,” Natalie Thomson, the group’s communications director, told The Dodo.

“She was nearly choking herself as she was so excited to see us. When we freed her, she couldn’t stop jumping up and down and giving hugs.”

It obviously begs the question as to who it was that actually left the dog there. Well, according to reports, it wasn’t a previous owner who simply forgot their dog when they moved out. Rather, a squatter had been occupying the property when nobody lived there. At some point, said squatter had left the place and abandoned several things, the dog included.

Just how anyone could leave a dog as pretty as that one chained up alone in a basement is anyone’s guess, but it’s certain that the dog wouldn’t have survived long alone. There was no bowl of water or food left out for her, and so it was quite the stroke of fortune that the new owner moved in when they did.

After the rescue, the dog was named ‘Jumping Bean’ for the sheer joy she showed at having been saved. She may have been subjected to a traumatic experience, but apparently she hasn’t come close to letting that get her down.

“Her personality is completely adorable,” Thomson went on to say. “She loves everyone she meets and craves attention. She makes sure she is not ignored! She’s an energetic and very affectionate pup! She is so happy all the time.”

You can watch the emotional video of Jumping Bean’s rescue, below:

Animal abandonment is a serious welfare issue with long-term consequences for both animals and communities. Responsible pet ownership, strict enforcement of animal cruelty laws, and support for professional rescue organizations are essential to preventing tragedies like this.

Early intervention, public awareness, and access to emergency animal services save lives — sometimes just in the nick of time.

Jumping Bean survived because someone cared enough to make one phone call.

There’s simply no place in this world for people capable of hurting or abandoning innocent animals. I’m just so relieved the situation was resolved and Jumping Bean will be given a second chance in life.
