Police respond to ‘sightings of a masked bandit,’ rescue raccoon with jar stuck on head

It’s a police officer’s duty to help those in need, whether they be human or animal. While some calls might be unexpected or unusual, they get the job done.

Like these Ohio police officers, who came to the rescue after a raccoon got its head stuck in a mayo jar.

According to a Facebook post, officers from the Painesville Police Department got a call about “sightings of a masked bandit.” But it wasn’t a cat burglar prowling the neighborhood — it was a raccoon in serious need of a helping hand.

The raccoon had gotten its head completely stuck in a mayonnaise jar, and the officers got to work freeing the distressed animal.

Video shows officers Chad Balausky and Steve Ettinger working to gently remove the mayo jar from the raccoon’s head. Once free, the raccoon quickly scurries away — so fast that their police intern had to hop out of the way.

Watch the video below:

The officers received praise from local citizens for saving the raccoon. “Thank you for all that you do – including rescuing this poor raccoon. You guys ARE the best!” one person commented on the Facebook post.

“What an incredibly loving act!” another wrote. “Your compassion shown this little creature is a wonderful example for everyone! You are all Heroes every single day!”

“You never know what you’ll see on night shift,” the Painesville Police Department wrote, implying that this was an unusual bit of police duty.

However, it’s not uncommon for raccoons to get stuck in jars like this. Raccoons like to go through our garbage in search of food, so it makes sense that they might go head-first into a discarded food jar with no way to get out.

People can help to avoid situations like this by properly recycling and putting lids back on discarded jars and cans. If you do find an animal with a jar on its head, contact your local authorities or animal rescue.

We’re so glad this raccoon is safe and free now, thank you to these officers for saving him! Please share this good news!
