Matthew Kropp understands this bond deeply. While stationed in Iraq, Matthew spent three years working side by side with his devoted military dog, Tina, a German Shepherd trained to detect explosives. Together, they protected the United States embassy, successfully preventing dangerous materials from entering the compound.
Matthew openly credits Tina with saving his life.
“Without her, I wouldn’t be alive,” he says.
In December 2017, Matthew received heartbreaking news. Tina had reached an age where she could no longer continue service and was officially retired from duty. At the time, Matthew believed he would never see his loyal companion again.
The separation was devastating.
Eventually, Matthew returned home to the United States, where he reunited with his wife and children. Despite being surrounded by family, something felt missing. The soldier who had relied on Tina for survival struggled to feel complete without the dog who had stood by him through constant danger.
That’s when K9 Hero Haven stepped in.
This organization is dedicated to finding loving homes for retired military dogs. Since 2015, it has helped place more than 200 former service dogs into permanent families that understand their unique backgrounds and sacrifices.
