Students Learn Sign Language To Celebrate Deaf Therapy Dog’s Birthday

Students at an elementary school in New Jersey gave their beloved therapy dog a birthday celebration he would never forget — by learning sign language so he could be part of the festivities.

Cole, a 9-year-old deaf pit bull mix, has spent the past seven years serving as a certified therapy dog at Dr. William Mennies Elementary School in Vineland. Adopted by music teacher Christopher Hannah, Cole has become a familiar and comforting presence for hundreds of students.

Each day, the dog greets children as they arrive at school, helps welcome them off buses and provides emotional support throughout the day. Staff members say his calm and friendly nature has made him an important part of the school community.

To celebrate Cole’s ninth birthday, students organized a surprise party inside the school auditorium. Rather than simply singing “Happy Birthday,” the children learned the song in American Sign Language so Cole could experience the celebration in a way that reflected his unique needs.

Video from the event showed Cole wearing a birthday crown and special shirt as students gathered around him, signing the lyrics while he enjoyed birthday treats and attention from his young admirers.

School officials said the event was about far more than a birthday celebration. It also provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate empathy, inclusion and respect for differences.

According to Hannah, Cole has helped teach children an important lesson: that a disability does not define an individual’s abilities.

Born deaf, Cole was once considered difficult to adopt. Hannah later turned his story into a mission focused on promoting acceptance and understanding for people and animals with disabilities.

Over the years, Cole’s impact has extended beyond the classroom. He has worked as a hospice therapy volunteer, supported military veterans and gained national recognition for his service and advocacy efforts.

For the students who see him every day, however, Cole is simply a trusted friend whose presence makes school a happier place.

And on his special day, the children found the perfect way to say thank you — without needing a single spoken word.

Animal-assisted therapy programs are becoming increasingly common in schools, healthcare facilities and community organizations due to their positive impact on emotional well-being and mental health. Studies suggest that therapy dogs can help reduce anxiety, improve social skills, support special education programs and create more inclusive learning environments. Educators and healthcare professionals continue to explore innovative ways to integrate therapy animals into student support services and emotional wellness initiatives.
