Study Claiming Humans Built A 25,000-Year-Old Pyramid In Indonesia Removed By Journal

The journal Archaeological Prospection recently made headlines by retracting a controversial study that suggested humans had built a pyramid-like structure in Indonesia some 25,000 years ago.

According to the study’s authors, this was sculpted by humans over thousands of years.

Published in November 2023, the study proposed that Gunung Padang, known as the “Mountain of Enlightenment,” was artificially sculpted into its current shape millennia ago, challenging established archaeological beliefs. The paper claimed to have unearthed evidence of hidden chambers and multiple construction stages, implying advanced building techniques far earlier than previously thought.

However, skepticism arose among archaeologists shortly after its publication. Critics questioned the validity of the evidence presented, highlighting the lack of compelling signs of human activity such as bone fragments or charcoal in the soil samples analyzed. Despite the team’s use of carbon dating to support their claims, the absence of associated artifacts raised doubts about the interpretation of the site as a man-made pyramid.

Subsequent investigations revealed a critical error in the study’s methodology: the radiocarbon dating was applied to soil samples lacking any clear association with human-made features. As a result, the journal retracted the paper, citing this fundamental flaw.

In response, the authors defended their work, asserting that the site’s layers contained tangible evidence of human activity. However, without conclusive proof linking these artifacts to the alleged construction, the notion of a man-made pyramid remains unsubstantiated.

Leading archaeologists cautioned against premature conclusions, emphasizing the need for robust evidence to support extraordinary claims. While the possibility of ancient human construction captivates the imagination, the current consensus leans towards Gunung Padang being a natural geological formation.

As the debate continues, researchers stress the importance of rigorous investigation and adherence to scientific principles in unraveling the mysteries of our past. Until stronger evidence emerges, the enigmatic mound of Gunung Padang remains an intriguing puzzle awaiting resolution.
