“He is wise, brave and extremely loving” ❤️
Chico is a lively cow, but even the most energetic creatures need a sleep now and then – and the lucky ones get to doze off directly on a friend’s shoulder.
Chico was rescued from a butcher and sent to The Gentle Barn, an animal refuge, in 2017. Since then, he’s been a barn favorite.
“Chico is incredible!” Ellie Laks, founder of The Gentle Barn, told The Dodo. “He is the leader, and he teaches the others what to do, defends them, and freely provides his hugs to all of us.” He is intelligent, courageous, and incredibly loving.”

Chico was clearly in command of the herd when he first arrived, according to Laks. The other cows followed Chico to the grass and woods. Laks realized that if she wanted to acquire the trust of everyone, she had to start with Chico. Fortunately, it wasn’t long until Chico was eating out of her hand and allowing her to give him rubs and embraces.
“Chico is now quite friendly, wrapping his neck around me and others in a warm embrace,” Laks explained.
Chico is self-sufficient, and he enjoys running about in the snow in the winter. When playing is ended and Chico is exhausted, the enormous cow turns into an even bigger softy. That became evident when he fell asleep on one of the volunteers’ shoulders.
Cows at the farm, according to Laks, become very friendly and physical once they learn to trust humans.
“Once they’ve healed, they learn to forgive, choose to trust us, lie down, and let us cuddle them,” Laks explained. “They return our cuddles by wrapping their necks around us or, in this example, resting their heads on us.”
Chico may now be found lounging in the field with some of his Gentle Barn family members, including Johnny Cash, Eddie, Houdini, and Roo.
Chico has lots of room to run about in his new home, and if he gets tired? There are plenty of shoulders to sleep on.
