When a shelter volunteer goes to let the dogs out, he discovers something unexpected

“All he did was stare at me and say, ‘And you are?'”

Whittney Jaques, a South Ogden Animal Shelter volunteer, arrived early one morning to care for the dogs. She returned to the kennels, expecting to see all of the familiar canine faces she had seen before, but all she saw was a rooster.

“I saw him simply chilling there like everything was normal when I came in,” Jaques told The Dodo. “All he did was stare at me and say, ‘And you are?’… I was both surprised and delighted! I had never seen a rooster in all my years of volunteering. He was in a dog kennel with a bed, which made it much funnier. I instantly started laughing, and he just stared at me like I was insane before going on with his day.”

Jaques had never encountered this circumstance before and didn’t know what to do, but she didn’t seem to be the only one who was taken aback. Both the rooster and the dogs pretended that everything was normal.

“The dogs were completely unconcerned about him,” Jaques remarked. “When I led them by him, they didn’t even sniff at the kennel.” Either he established his control or they just became accustomed to him. I believe they made quick friends since the black dog had previously been around chickens and was quite excellent with them… He simply had this royal bearing about him, like if the dogs were his subjects. He didn’t enjoy being picked up, but the dogs didn’t bother him.”

Clearly, the rooster was accustomed to being the pack’s leader, and the dogs simply accepted it.

Because the animals were behaving normally, Jaques followed suit and went about her volunteer responsibilities as usual. She later contacted a shelter employee, who confirmed that the rooster was actually supposed to be there. Despite the fact that roosters aren’t generally accepted at the shelter, he was discovered as a stray and they opted to help him.

Fortunately, the rooster didn’t have to wait long at the refuge. He was adopted by a police sergeant in the area and is now living his finest life. He didn’t appear to mind staying for a while – he seemed to like being one of the dogs.
