7-Year-Old Dog Left Heartbroken After Owner Surrenders Him to Shelter — Rescue Says They’re “Sick and Tired”

Owning a dog is supposed to be a lifetime commitment. Sadly, far too many people abandon their pets for reasons that feel painfully casual — without considering the emotional damage left behind.

When a rescue group recently took in a dog surrendered by the only owner he’d ever known, they could no longer stay silent. Their message was raw, angry, and heartbreaking. They said they were simply “sick and tired” of seeing dogs treated as disposable.

Earlier this month, a 7-year-old male dog was surrendered to Greenville Animal Control Shelter in Greenville, Texas. According to a Facebook post, the reason given was that his owner was having a baby and would no longer be able to “give him enough attention.”

Just like that, the dog’s entire world was ripped away.

From Family Member to Shelter Kennel

After seven years in the same home, the dog suddenly found himself surrounded by strangers, noise, and uncertainty. Older dogs already face a tougher road to adoption, and in a crowded shelter, the risk of euthanasia is very real.

Fortunately, Lone Star Dog Ranch & Dog Ranch Rescue stepped in before it was too late. They paid the $17 adoption fee and immediately took the dog into their care.

But their relief quickly turned into anger.

“This is what your dog’s face looks like when you’ve had him for seven years and then had a baby and decided to dispose of him at a shelter,” the rescue wrote in a powerful Facebook post.

They didn’t hold back.

“I always wonder,” they continued, “did it make you feel bad while you stood in line? Did you look back at him when you walked away? Did you see his face asking you why? Or did you forget about him five minutes later?”

A Rescue’s Painful Truth

The post went on with heartbreaking honesty:

“Was your house so much better once the dog was gone? Could you finally raise your child in peace? Can you tell this makes me angry? I hope so. I hope you feel at least a small amount of pain.”

The dog, now named Rooney, was reported to be suffering from stress and diarrhea — common symptoms in dogs who have been abruptly abandoned. Despite everything, the rescue described him as sweet, gentle, and loving.

In later updates, Lone Star shared that Rooney remained in isolation and was still nervous, struggling to understand why his owners had dumped him. Slowly, however, he began to settle in.

A Promise for Life

The rescue is now determined to find Rooney a home that will never give up on him again.

“You’re a senior now,” they wrote, “but we will find you a home that won’t throw you away because of a small change in life.”

Rooney didn’t deserve to lose his family — but thanks to compassionate rescuers, he has not lost his chance at love.

Please share Rooney’s story and remind others that dogs are not temporary commitments — they are family 😢❤️

Senior dog adoption remains one of the biggest challenges facing animal shelters today. Older dogs are often overlooked despite being calmer, well-trained, and deeply loyal companions. Supporting rescue organizations, encouraging responsible pet ownership, and educating families about lifelong commitments can help reduce shelter overcrowding and prevent unnecessary surrender cases like Rooney’s.
