“He was waiting for them to come back …”
Adriana Figueroa was driving through the streets of southern Miami on her way home from the gym when she noticed a little brown dog by the side of the road.
She noticed the dog staring into the distance as she approached, as if expecting his former family’s car to appear on the horizon at any moment.
“It was as if they had abandoned him,” Figueroa told us. “And he waited for them to return.”
Unfortunately, Figueroa had seen an abandoned dog in her neighborhood before. It’s common to see pets left to fend for themselves in Figueroa’s neighborhood of southern Miami. That’s why, two years ago, Figueroa began volunteering for rescues.
“I’m always finding dumped dogs,” Figueroa explained. “I keep dog food in my car at all times, and I recently added a medium crate.”
Figueroa documented the dog’s rescue in this video:
Figueroa spent two hours patiently coaxing the little pup into the safety of her car.
The cautious dog, later named Melo, initially avoided Figueroa’s care and refused to eat. However, after about an hour, his affectionate side began to show as he began to trust his new friend.
“He was incredibly loving,” Figueroa said. “He enjoyed being pet.”
Figueroa began looking for Melo’s permanent family after searching for his owners and determining that he had been abandoned.
Fortunately, her search was quick. Soon after, someone in her network saw a photo of the puppy and inquired about adoption.
“It was flawless!” Figueroa explained.
Settled into his new home, Melo is enjoying all the comforts a permanent family has to offer, resting easy in the knowledge that these new loved ones will never leave him behind.
