40-Year-Old Parrot Survives Two Weeks Alone After Her Owner Dies

When Debbie was discovered alone inside her home, she was barely strong enough to stand.

The 40-year-old parrot had spent approximately two weeks by herself after her owner died, waiting for someone to find her. By the time rescuers brought her to Marin Humane, she was severely weak and needed intensive care.

“She could barely stand,” Sam W., shelter operations manager at Marin Humane, told The Dodo. Debbie could still eat and drink, but only very slowly. Staff provided her with padded housing, special perches, warmth, specialized lighting and a carefully designed diet to help her regain her strength.

For weeks, Debbie’s personality seemed almost completely gone. She was too exhausted to show much emotion. But as her body recovered, her spirit gradually returned.

“As she felt better and got stronger, she got brighter and a bit more sassy and opinionated about things,” Sam said.

The shelter eventually located Debbie’s next of kin, who revealed that the bird was around 40 years old. Despite everything she had endured, Debbie still had plenty of life ahead of her.

She was eventually placed in a foster home, where her transformation continued.

“When she first arrived, she used to hunch over and quietly hiss at me,” her foster mother, Carina, told The Dodo. But after several days of patience and plenty of treats, Debbie became increasingly curious whenever her foster mother approached.

Carina spends time beside Debbie’s open cage while working, allowing the parrot to become comfortable with human hands without forcing physical contact. Debbie is still not ready to be handled, so her caregivers are letting her recover at her own pace.

She has also begun showing more of her personality. Debbie can talk, greeting her foster mother with “hello” each morning before asking, “Whatcha doing?” She enjoys sitting beside a window, watching the world outside, and is particularly fascinated by garbage trucks. Food remains one of her greatest pleasures, and she makes happy little sounds whenever it’s time to eat.

Now, Debbie is looking for a permanent home suited to her age and special needs.

Her ideal family would have experience caring for senior parrots and understand that trust can take time. Because her mobility is limited, a peaceful home with plenty of natural light, windows and companionship would be ideal.

Debbie has already survived an incredibly difficult chapter of her life. After being left alone for two weeks, she was given another chance—and with patience, care and affection, the elderly parrot is finally beginning to show the world the lively personality that was hidden beneath her suffering.

Caring for Senior Parrots

Older parrots can live for decades and often require specialized care as they age. A safe environment, nutritious food, regular veterinary attention, comfortable perches and gentle companionship can make a major difference to their quality of life. For rescued birds, patience is especially important, as rebuilding trust after neglect or trauma can take weeks or even months. Giving an elderly animal the right care can help transform its final years into a peaceful and rewarding new chapter.
