“A dog is a man’s best friend,” as the cliché goes, but this pet pig would disagree. Meet Chowder, a 6-year-old Vietnamese potbellied pig with a unique assortment of animal companions. In Southern California, the tamed farm animal lives with five rescue pups called Rika, Slick, Nya, James, and Bashe, as well as his owner, Shelby Madere. (They are collectively known as @piggypoo and crew.) We all know how wonderful dogs are as pets, but Chowder demonstrates he’s just as cuddly and affectionate as his canine brothers.
Pigs are known for being friendly and clever, and Vietnamese potbellied pigs are no exception, loving nothing more than a good snuggle. Shelby, who often posts images of the cute bunch on Instagram, says, “When I look at my crew, I see a mirror of who I am in them.” “Their happiness, safety, health, and entire existence are dependent on me, and I will never let them down.” Chowder doesn’t let their differences get in the way, and he and his canine pals frequently play in the yard together, even wearing identical collars—tailored to his size, of course.
Follow Chowder and his gang on Instagram to keep up with their beautiful daily life.
