Horses are among the most devoted and protective creatures, particularly when one of their own lives is in danger. These magnificent creatures are always willing to risk their life in order to save their families. Horses are brave when it comes to defending those they care about, whether they live on a farm or in the wild.

When a young and inexperienced foal failed to cross a river, it was a wild stallion that stepped up and rescued the day. The tragic scenario took place in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest, and luckily one of the rangers was there to see it and even capture it on camera.

Thousands of wild horses formerly roamed the biggest national forest in Arizona, but now just a few families of mustangs live there. So when Park Service volunteer Becky Standridge saw a group of people eating along the Salt River’s banks, he recognized them right once. It was the well-known Champ, a powerful stallion with a vast family.

It was such a nice sunny afternoon when the tranquility was abruptly disrupted by several loud neighs from the opposite side of the river. Horses are gentle creatures, despite their territorial nature (excepting the mating season). Despite the fact that the two groups of horses first avoided one another, the courageous Champ chose to cross the river and explore.

Only the swift and powerful currents proved too much for an inexperienced foal. The small one was absorbed by the swift river in a matter of seconds, and it appeared that she was doomed. Thankfully, the powerful Champ was on hand to rescue the day.

When the big stallion noticed the little horse was battling to keep her head above water, he approached her and pointed her in the proper way. He took the distraught foal under his wing and safeguarded her until she reached the safety waters and then the shores on the other side of the river, just like a caring father would.
