In the picturesque landscapes of Austria’s Lake Millstatt, a breathtaking natural spectacle unfolded as amateur filmmaker Peter Maier, 27, captured a stunning timelapse video of a storm unleashing a deluge of water into the tranquil waters of the Alpine lake. The captivating footage showcased the mesmerizing weather phenomenon known as a wet microburst, revealing the sheer power of nature in action.

Mr. Maier, who works as a fitter in the energy industry in the city of Basel, Switzerland, was fortunate to witness and record the awe-inspiring event during his stay at Lake Millstatt. As the dark clouds gathered ominously over the lake, the intensity of the storm became evident. Then, in a dramatic and almost surreal moment, the heavens seemed to open up, and a massive torrent of water cascaded into the lake below, resembling a tsunami descending from the skies.

“It was like a tsunami from heaven,” Mr. Maier described the spectacle, clearly awestruck by the force of nature he had witnessed and recorded. The video captured the raw power of the wet microburst, an intense small-scale downdraft produced by a thunderstorm, as it engulfed the lake in a torrential downpour.

Sharing the incredible timelapse on social media, Mr. Maier’s video quickly went viral, amassing an astounding 1.4 million views and over 25,000 shares. Some viewers were so astonished by the footage that they initially suspected it to be a fake, prompting Mr. Maier to share the original version to assure the authenticity of the breathtaking scene.

As an avid mountaineer and nature enthusiast, Peter Maier always carries multiple cameras in his backpack, ever ready to capture the wonders of the natural world. In this instance, his preparedness paid off, and he was able to immortalize this rare and striking event.

Amateur filmmaker Peter Maier, 27, who captured the incredible timelapse video, said: ‘One can’t plan on capturing such images. It was a lucky shot’

The phenomenon of microbursts, whether wet or dry, remains a subject of fascination and concern among meteorologists and aviation experts. While dry microbursts are capable of causing substantial damage with their strong downdrafts, wet microbursts can pose significant hazards to aviation and other activities due to the sudden and intense precipitation they bring.

In the past, several fatal and historic air crashes have been attributed to microbursts. As a result, flight crews now undergo rigorous training on how to handle and recover from these dangerous weather phenomena.

One commenter said it looked ‘as if someone had poured a bucket of water up there’. Mr Maier himself described it as a ‘tsunami from heaven’

While microbursts may be challenging to predict and capture on film, Peter Maier’s lucky shot serves as a striking reminder of the awe-inspiring power of nature and the importance of appreciating and respecting its forces. The breathtaking timelapse footage of the storm over Lake Millstatt is a testament to the beauty and unpredictability of our natural world, inviting us to marvel at its wonders and cherish the fleeting moments of its grandeur.
