An Environmental Activist Wears A Custom Suit That Displays All Of The Trash He Generated In month

It can be difficult to fully comprehend how much trash you generate in a given time period. However, environmental activist Rob Greenfield is not one of them. He wore a custom suit that held all of his garbage for 30 days to demonstrate what one month of garbage looks like. Because the unusual garment is clear, we can see all of the cans, coffee cups, fry boxes, and other items he discarded.

Greenfield designed the suit to help people visualize the amount of garbage produced each day. “The average American generates 4.5 pounds of trash per day, but most people never think twice about their trash,” according to his website. “Once it’s in the garbage can, it’s out of sight, out of mind.” Greenfield hopes that by showing what that looks like, people will reconsider their trash and opt for more sustainable options in the future.

The suit was part of the Trash Me campaign, which changed every day throughout the month. Greenfield had very little in the suit when he first put it on. However, by the end of his time in the trash garment, it weighed more than 100 pounds.

Greenfield is a “walking billboard” for consumerism, imploring us to make positive changes that will benefit the planet. He’s even shared his top tips for where to start, such as buying used and reusable items, composting everything you can, and shopping locally.

Trash Me in action can be seen in the video below.

The suit weighed more than 100 pounds by the end of the month, which makes sense given that the average American generates 4.5 pounds of trash per day.
