“She’s getting back to herself now” ❤️️
A 13-year-old dog named Abby has been living alone at the bottom of a 12-foot pit for months now, but she has just returned to her family’s house.
On a project weekend with the Cave Research Foundation, an unaware party of recreational cavers located the missing senior pup well inside Missouri’s Moore Cave System.
According to one of Abby’s rescuers, Rick Haley, “She was just balled up on the floor.” She was limited to lifting her head.
Frank Keene, the group’s main caver, took a photo of Abby when they first saw her. He immediately left the cave and started gathering assistance for the completely vertical rescue.
He first got in touch with Assistant Fire Chief Rob Calhoun, who canvassed the neighborhood to see whether anyone knew the dog in the photo.
Haley recalled one of them saying, “Yeah, I guess that’s the neighbor’s dog just over there.” That is how they managed to contact [her owner]
It was a risky venture for the rescuers and the dog, so Keene enlisted Haley’s assistance. The only way to free Abby—who had been trapped in the cave for a considerable amount of time—was to pull her through the little opening she had initially fallen through.
Haley added, “I had previously pulled dogs out of caves, but those dogs weren’t there for very long and could be walked out.
Haley had to figure out a method to get Abby off the ground without stressing her out for this mission. He took an empty duffel bag and lined it with a soft blanket on a whim.
With the top open, Haley set the duffle bag down on the chilly rock surface next to Abby. The anxious dog shocked both of her rescuers when she carefully and alone entered the duffel bag and nearly fell asleep.
Haley remarked, “It was warm, dry, and soft.” She felt completely at ease.
Abby’s head protruding from the duffle bag, Haley and Keene carefully began to lead Abby out of the cave by moving her vertically.

Abby was pulled into the light by Assistant Fire Chief Calhoun as he reached in, took the duffle bag from the rescuers, and grabbed hold of her.
When Haley performed a cursory medical examination of Abby after the rescue, he saw that she was incredibly underweight and that her pupils were still highly dilated from the months she had spent in total darkness.
Shortly after, Abby’s father arrived at the scene of the rescue and was shocked to see his dog again after being apart from her for two long months. He took her home, where he started immediately seeing to her medical needs.
One week after the daring rescue, Haley ran across Abby and her owner once more. He noted a significant difference in the pup, although she was still quite frail and skinny.
Haley stated, “She growled at me when I pulled up. She wasn’t even barking for a time, but I believe she is now returning to herself.
