“He’d completely given up …”
When Stray Rescue of St. Louis received a call about a dog sleeping on a residential street during a heat wave, they politely requested that the caller email them photos of the pup so that they could better determine how to assist.
“The photo this individual supplied us showed the dog lying down,” Donna Lochmann, chief lifesaving officer of St. Louis Stray Rescue, told The Dodo. “It was difficult to tell, but it appeared like you could see his hip bones.” So I knew it was certainly worth a look.”
Lochmann arrived on the scene soon but was unable to locate the pup. She made a last-minute decision to enter an alley, and that’s when she saw him.
“I spotted him lying in the street,” Lochmann explained. “He was resting in the water pouring up from a gutter, most likely to stay cool because it was so hot.”
As Lochmann came closer, she understood how badly the dog needed assistance.
“He must’ve heard me when I got to the end of the lane,” Lochmann explained. “I saw him lift his head, glance around, and then flop his head back down on the curb as if he’d given up.”
Lochmann’s heart was broken when he saw the puppy lying alone on the street with no energy or hope for the future.
“It literally killed me,” Lochmann claimed. “‘There’s no way I’m leaving this puppy here,’ I told myself.”

Fortunately for Lochmann, the abused dog had no objections to being saved. He even walked himself to her jeep, untethered.
“I approached him and said, ‘Come on, buddy… we’re going to assist you.'”
The puppy immediately made himself at home in the automobile.
“I keep blankets in the back of the jeep, so he immediately laid down,” Lochmann explained. “He appeared so glad for air conditioning and a comfy place to be.”
The adorable dog, eventually named Curby, really enjoyed his “freedom trip” to safety, according to the shelter.
“He was promptly placed in a foster family,” Lochmann added. “When a couple viewed his video, the lady told her husband, ‘That dog should not be in a shelter.'” So they came and got him.”
Curby is enjoying his new foster home, where he has two wonderfully loving parents and a dog brother with whom he enjoys cuddling. He’s finally starting to gain weight, and his personality has really blossomed in his new home.
“His foster parents are completely smitten,” Lochmann added. “He turned out to be the most adorable child ever.”
