A Deaf Hiker Falls 700 Feet, But When Rescuers Locate Her, She Isn’t Alone

by Stephen King 9 Comments

Being young means traveling the world and learning about different cultures and places. Some people prefer to stay in their native nation, while others travel to another country or participate in a hard activity.

Amelia Milling, a deaf twenty-one-year-old, isn’t scared to take risks and opted to climb a mountain in Alaska by herself.

However, something went awry, and she plunged hundreds of feet down the mountain. Then a rescue chopper discovered her — but, to their surprise, she wasn’t alone.

Amelia Milling enjoys trying new things. While most people her age prefer beach vacations or smartphone games, she has other interests.

Youtube

Amelia decided to embark on a three-day hike in Alaska, and everything seemed to be going well at first. Amelia, who is deaf, began her ascent of a major mountain when everything went wrong.

Amelia somehow lost her balance and fell down the snow-covered mountainside. She slid over 300 feet before collapsing into a boulder and sliding another 300 feet.

Youtube

The 21-year-old was stranded alone on the mountain. Luckily, though, she didn’t break any bones and could still walk. But she did have a big problem.

Since she had fallen so far, Amelia had no idea where she was. She was lost in an unfamiliar landscape and was wondering what she could do.

Freezing and with over 24 hours having passed since her fall, Amelia knew that she was in trouble.

Youtube

But then something happened that made Amelie’s heart skip a beat.

She noticed what appeared to be a white wolf in the distance. Amelia was concerned because she knew how wolves behaved around humans.

When the white dog got closer, Amelie noticed it was wearing a collar.

Youtube

The husky, whose name is Nanook, had “guide” written on his collar and was actually a trail guide dog that worked on the mountain finding lost hikers and bringing them back to the trail. Talk about finding the right dog at the right time!

Youtube

Nanook had discovered Amelia and had a new task.

Nanook aided Amelia in retracing her steps and stayed with her all night to ensure she wasn’t alone.

Amelia attempted to cross a river the next day, but the powerful currents drew her underwater.

Nanook was there for her once more. He jumped in, grabbed her backpack strap, and pulled her out of the icy glacier water.

Amelia had a GPS transmitter that she could use to send a signal if anything went wrong, and she finally decided to use it.

Youtube

The signal was picked up by the local rescue service, who sent a helicopter to find her.

Alaska State Troopers were called out to her location and delivered her to safety, with Nanook by her side.

Although the rescuers flew her home, she claims that Nanook is her true hero.

“The dog was a real help,” police chief Eric Olsen told News.com. “He’s Alaska’s version of Lassie.”

Nanook was the hero of the day, and it appears that this wasn’t the first time the heroic dog had helped someone on the mountain.

Youtube

Nanook’s owners were notified of his heroic act and they were shocked that he had wandered so far from home.

Although, apparently this isn’t the first time Nanook has saved someone’s life.

A little girl once became caught in the river current and he pulled her to safety. What an amazing dog!

Watch this video to see Amelia reunite with Nanook and to hear her tell the story:

The Lord works in mysterious ways…  Thanks be to God for sending an awesome dog.

Nanook is a real hero who stayed by Amelie’s side the whole way.

Smart Survival Technology — A Game Changer for Explorers

Amelia’s story also shines a light on a growing innovation in the world of smart survival technology. Today, leading companies in AI-driven satellite safety systems are developing wearable devices that continuously monitor vital signs, track real-time location, and even predict hypothermia or oxygen drops before they happen. These devices — originally created for mountaineers and space explorers — are now being adopted by travelers, medical institutions, and even government rescue teams worldwide. Experts say this technology will soon become as essential as travel insurance, saving countless lives and redefining the future of wilderness exploration.
Learn more about smart survival tools, rescue technology, and outdoor safety tips that could make the difference between life and death in the wilderness.

Dogs are smart, quick to learn, protect humans, can hear a pin drop at 50 paces. Stay strong & look after you. A dog will lie down and keep you safe in all weather’s, he will never, ever leave you, He will love you forever & ever……

    Love dogs!
I too had a dog save me from some very angry geese. We ate a steak together that evening. I was extremely grateful.

A remarkable situation! All credit to the bravery of Amelia and the marvellous Nanook! I am so impressed and Praise God for both of their ‘natural instincts’ and also for the brilliance of the rescue team, which finally flew Amelia and Nanook home! Nanook is truly a splendid dog! The people in the area where Amelia fell, are So fortunate, to be protected, by Nanook who is more able than the ordinary ‘man/
woman the street’ that I know, anyhow!
